Professional Codevelopment

The competence is already in your organization. Codevelopment helps it circulate.

Groups where everyone learns from the others, based on real situations. We facilitate your codevelopment groups, and we train and supervise your in-house facilitators.

The power of codevelopment

Competence is usually already present in organizations, but it is fragmented between individuals. By encouraging the exchange of knowledge, skills and experience, codevelopment groups develop:

  • individual and collective competence
  • internal communication
  • cooperation and trust

How a codevelopment group works

A learning approach for people who believe they can learn from one another to improve their practice, through a structured consultation exercise on real situations.

  1. A client presents

In turn, one participant presents a situation from their practice that they want to improve.

  2. The consultants help

The other participants ask questions, share their experience and suggest ideas to deepen the client’s understanding and capacity to act.

  3. Everyone learns

The client leaves with an action plan, and each participant draws lessons for their own practice.

The format

In practice

  • 4 to 8 people, with a facilitator
  • Sessions of 2 to 4 hours, with 1 or 2 “clients” each time
  • Once or twice a month, for six months to a year

The rules

A framework of trust

  • Confidentiality
  • Trust
  • Willingness to learn, with the risk of changing

What participants gain

Become more effective

Find new ways of thinking, feeling and acting in your practice, and take time regularly to reflect on your work.

Belong to a group

A professional peer group built on trust and solidarity, where you learn to help and to be helped.

Strengthen your professional identity

Two ways to work with us

Facilitation

We facilitate your groups

We support a group in its professional development around a shared strategic theme, for example management culture or leading change.

  • 4 to 8 people
  • Sessions of 2 to 3 hours, about once a month, for six months to a year
  • On your premises or online

Training

We train your facilitators

To build a codevelopment culture in your organization, we train and supervise your in-house facilitators.

  • One day of initial training with hands-on practice
  • The tools: case preparation sheets, facilitation guide, session summaries
  • Individual supervision during one of their groups
  • Group supervision of facilitators, in codevelopment

The origins

An approach born in Quebec

In the 1990s, in Montreal and Sherbrooke, Adrien Payette and Claude Champagne developed a new approach to training that gives experience and action their due while multiplying the strengths of individual intelligence. The Réseau francophone du codéveloppement et de l’action-formation was created in 2000.

The founding principles

  • Practice produces knowledge that science cannot produce.
  • Learning a professional practice is learning to act.
  • Sharing experiences with others makes learning possible that would be impossible otherwise.
  • The practitioner in action is a unique person in a unique situation.
  • The subjectivity of the actor is as important as the objectivity of the situation.
  • Work on professional identity is at the heart of codevelopment.
  • To learn to act better, you have to make room for your own incompetence.

Frequently asked questions

What is professional codevelopment?

A learning approach born in Quebec in the 1990s: a small group of professionals learns together from real situations, through a structured exercise in which each person takes turns as client and consultant.

How many people are in a group?

From 4 to 8 people, with a facilitator, so that everyone can be a client and discussions stay rich.

How often does the group meet?

Once or twice a month, for six months to a year, in sessions of 2 to 4 hours with one or two “clients” per session.

Can sessions be held online?

Yes. We facilitate groups on your premises, in Quebec, Ontario, France, Belgium and Switzerland, or online.

Can we facilitate our own groups?

Yes. We train your in-house facilitators in one day, with the necessary tools, then supervise them individually and as a group.

Is codevelopment part of a broader programme?

Often, yes: it complements individual coaching and training in our talent development programmes.
